This page, along with quite a few that have been created recently, refers to one of the stratagems from Ma Xiaochun's "Thirty-six stratagems applied to Go".

This page's content seems to have been deleted as it did appear to be spam. I think that perhaps what was written here was not the best phrased, but the page itself could be useful to have.

There do appear to be pages for these already, but not in the main index. (I'm not sure how they do appear, but they're linked from SecretArtOfWar.)

Perhaps this, and the other pages, does have some value?

Hi, Tealeaf. Thanks for your efforts. :-)

If you put a weiqi example on this page (and similar pages), it would help, both to show the relevance of the page and how it applies to weiqi. It is not at all clear how Beauty Trap applies to weiqi.

Hi Bill,

I seem to have given the impression that I made these pages -- I didn't!

I just noticed that the names that had been created recently matched up to the names in the thirty-six stratagems book, and one had been edited because it was mistakenly believed to be spam.

I was defending the potential for its existence, not claiming ownership of it!

Bill: Re: 36 stratagems (2007-08-26 18:17) [#3848]

Thanks for clearing that up. :-)

Do you -- does anybody -- have any examples of these strategems, as applied to go?

tealeaf: Re: 36 stratagems (2007-08-26 22:01) [#3849]

Well, Ma Xiaochun certainly does. :D

I recognized the terms because I have the book on my shelf. I'd be happy to summarise the ideas in my kyu-level way, although I'm a little busy for the next month finishing my PhD before they kick me out of the University!

For the moment, I'll try and write a quick description of the Beauty Trap stratagem as applied to Go. Alternatively, these pages could be deleted and the content filled in if and when someone felt inclined to do it properly.

As far as I understand, this was supposed to be not Ma Xiaochuns application of the stratagems but an original and fresh sl application of the stratagems to Go.

tealeaf: Re: 36 stratagems (2007-08-26 22:59) [#3851]

I'm don't quite understand. Do you mean that these pages were created to be a different take on the thirty-six stratagems applied to weiqi than that of Ma Xiaochun?

I didn't see that on any of the pages that were created. I'm sorry if that's why they were created! At the moment they seem to be little more than holding pages without much information in them related to weiqi.

I assumed, as Ma Xiaochun quite famously wrote the book that applied these, that the pages were there to reference that work.

Do you know who created them?

The version history knows... What I found most informative in this book were not the stratagems - sometimes the applications are somewhat forced imho, as with this stratagem - but to see a top professionals positional judgement and how much all stratagems, applications etc. depend on the ability to read further than your opponent did. (Seeing a sequence leading to a ko, your opponent missed, stuff like this.)
