Hi all,

The Chinese term "bu2 ru4 zu3" or "bu2 ru4 qi4" is not exactly suicide, which is zero liberty after being played, it is, on the other hand, one liberty after being played and is most probably getting captured immediately. This term is useful in discussing tsumego problems as a technique in solving them. Of course, you can say it is "short of liberties" as the other term "qi4 jin3", however, these two terms have a minor difference in nuance that the latter can refer to one or more liberties.

Please look into this confusion.

Thanks, Dino

What? And why not use the Chinese characters? It would make it easier for the rest of us to google them.

I agree it would be better to use the Chinese characters. You can actually look up bu2 in Wiktionary, where it says it is an alternative spelling of bú, which in turn is a Pinyin transcription of 繼, 轎, 醪 or 樸. However I saw somewhere that bu2 expresses negation, which none of those seem to. I did not try the other components.

The only Chinese term the page (as of 2021-07-11, which was also the version when this thread was started) mentions is 自杀 (zi4 sha1), so I am not sure why you mention these other terms. Are you perhaps saying that this is a common misconception worth mentioning on the page. If you know about this you are welcome to edit the page, and if you are unsure you could still add a suitably hedged remark, which others may then amplify or correct. And as DuEm6 says, it would be helpful if you were to use the actual characters: you can just put them into your text, though they will be replaced by the correct encoding.
