Ancient History

Once upon time IYT was the only place to play turn-based Go. But it was difficult to find a good game, because there were no ratings, and there was no way to find out who likes to play Go. Some users added "kyu" to their ID, so other players could find them.

At that time Steve Rich started the TBGG to help Go players to find each other and to set up good games. The TBGG implemented a rating system, which helped to set up properly handicapped games.

Back in those days there were not any turn-based Go tournaments either. Some TBGG members took the time to set up tournaments, while others wrote useful software to create SGF files.

Erik and Rio were TBGG members who dared a next step. They created their own turn-based Go servers: Erik created Dragon, Rio Little Golem.

The TBGG mail list used to be very active; there was a lot of discussion about ratings, tournaments, scoring of games, etc. But with the introduction of forums at Dragon and Little Golem, the list has become rather quiet.

Current History

TBGG is alive:

  • organizing interesting turn-based Go tournaments ...
  • not only for the unthinkable case that Dragon or Little Golem might disappear some day ...
