The Surrounding Game
THE SURROUNDING GAME (2017) is a feature-length documentary film about the game of Go. The film follows three young prodigies, Andy Liu, Ben Lockhart, and Curtis Tang, as they vie to become the first-ever Western-certified professional Go players. From the film's website: "As the competition intensifies and intricate patterns spill out across the board, their thoughts turn to anxieties about the future, and lead them on a journey through the the world of Go to ask what it means to live a meaningful life. Through an intimate portrait of its characters and interviews with many of the greatest living Go masters of the modern era, the film explores humanity's timeless attraction to Go, and what it reveals about our own minds."
Official poster for the filmDirectors Will Lockhart and Cole Pruitt founded the project in April 2012, and launched a Kickstarter campaign in June of that year, raising ~$25,000 from over 400 backers. The bulk of shooting took place between August 2012 and June 2013, with locations including: the 28th US Go Congress in North Carolina, New York City, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Osaka, and Seoul.
