Shygost/Shygost Lesson Exchange

Introduction

It has long been my desire to create a group that could exchange recordings of shygost's lesson. The basic idea is to make a collection of recordings as complete as is possible.

When shygost started his lessons I was very inept at making such recordings and so my energy was absorbed by the recordings them selves. Now I am feel more comfortable, making recordings but they are strewn all over my system creating a mess.

My desire is still to create a collection of recordings and so I create this page.

I myself have many videos, or the preliminary stuff for a video. In the following weeks, I shall be collecting it together and making it available as soon as possible. ( Before I distribute a video I want to check it out.)

This page will take a while to create so please be patient. After looking at the page and getting a feel for if you feel you have something to contribute ( a recording or some more editing), feel free to edit it.

Recordings

Generally any form of recording will be accepted here. There are however a few things which would be preferable. So anyone who might in the future record, should try to follow this criteria.

Once I settled down and new what I was doing, I decided to use xvid for my video codec and ogg for my audio codec. This forced me to use mkv as my container format. __Please do not put ogg files into an avi container__. That causes problems on some peoples systems.

The best format of recording the lecture is a simple audio recording of what was said and a video of the goban ( where possible ) I think other formats (eg a transcription ) are harder to produce. I also think that while this format provides some dificulties (eq you can stop the recording but you cannot play out your own variations ), others provide even more difficulties.

Aside from that, the single most important thing is that __they be produced using public domain audio and video codecs which can be played on generic Linux and Windows machines with public domain or free software and can be edited with public domain software ( mencoder, VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod__ ).

The reason for this is that legal difficulties are avoided doing it this way.

The one other major criteria is that they be compressed as small as they get. The codecs that most recording software uses is some lossless codec with minimal compression. While this consumes minimal CPU time when recording ( which on some systems can be a problem, and this is the part done in real time ) it creates large videos ( on the order of 3/4 of a gigabyte). Using some simple and common codecs, I have discovered that this can generally be brought down to about 50-70M.
