(最高位戦, Saikoi Tournament) This was essentially a tournament for higher rank players above the Oteai and together sponsored by the Asahi Shinbun. Challenge match of 5 games was played between the titleholder and the challenger, the winner of 9-player round robin league. As an extension of the Oteai, komi was not used, except for game 5 of the challenge match where 4.5 point komi was used.

Replaced after a gap by the Pro Best Ten title.
