Chinese Promotion Tournament
(全国围棋段位赛) The Chinese Promotion Tournament is an annual tournament for gaining rank promotions among Chinese professional players. Since 1998, it has been held each year in July.
When the Chinese Go Association first initiated its professional ranking system, in 1982, the Chinese Promotion Tournament was held several times over the span of two years to promote amateurs to professionals and build China's professional player base. The first was held in March of 1982, and included the first ten, newly minted, Chinese professionals and over 100 amateurs. The next few happened in December 1982, May 1983 and November 1983. In 1984, it became a tournament just for professionals, but went on hiatus in 1986 as the Chinese Go Association reorganized its priorities. The tournament returned in 1987 as an annual, professional, June event. From 1996-97, it was held in the Spring, and since 1998 is has been held in July.
