Beginner Exercise 52 / Solution

Sub-page of BeginnerExercise52

unkx80: This problem demonstrates the technique of expanding the eye space for making life.

Solution by lavalyn:

Let's make some space

Making an uncuttable eye extension is a good thing.

If W2 at W4, then B3 at B5. They are direct responses to the other.

White wants to cut - like she could

fringd: the simple stretch at B1 is too slow.

W resists

mgelo: A stronger reply by W is 2 and 4, in my opinion. B can still make seki.

Black lives

TimK: Black can live outright, too.

7.62: Do they ? W goes to a.

xela: Do you mean W4 at a? Then black replies with B5 at W4. Or do you mean at the end of the diagram sequence, W8 at a? Then B9 at b. Either way black is alive.

White kills?

Skylancer (2k): Can't white kill like this if Black just connects at B3?

White kills again.

Variation, a and b are miai and Black dies.

I believe Black must descend with B3. Black is guaranteed an eye at a and b.
