Solution

Solution

In this problem, Black cannot live unconditionally. We start off by playing at B1, which reduces the liberties of the white+circle stones by one.

Solution

If W2 wants to kill, then the number of liberties of the white+circle stones is further reduced by one. This enables B3 to start a ko for life.

Failure

Failure

Although B1 also reduces the number of liberties of the white+circle stones by one, W2 destroys the eye and does not have to reduce the number of liberties of the white+circle stones. So Black loses the capturing race.

Although cutting at B1 seems like a reasonable move, W2 is a clever move that kills.
