This is more of a plan than an enclosure, perhaps.

Natural plays  

This is perhaps what one now expects here. The question is about White 3. White can simply live in the corner, but is that enough here?

Giving Black something  

Judging by pro games, White does best to prevent being shut in first, by playing contact moves on the outside. White a for a table shape is the aim of 5. (See 3-5 point, 4-3 approach, one-space pincer.)

Coming in at 3-3  

Invading at 3-3 must also be possible, but Black naturally plays 2 with more efficient shape. This happened in a 1987 game Yamashiro Hiroshi-Cao Dayuan.
