closing ceremony

The Closing Ceremony has varied from congress to congress. It has been:

  • A series of speeches, translated into Japanese, English and the local language, by the organiser, the sponsors, the town council, professional players etc.
  • An entertainment.
  • A meal - sit down or buffet.
  • Drinks.

It always includes the prizegiving and is always for everybody.

Prizes are usually given to:

  • Players in the top handful of places in the main tournament.
  • Players in the main tournament with good results (eg 7.5/10).
  • Players in the main tournament who attended the second week only who have good results (eg 3.5/5)
  • Prizes for the second week side events.
  • Prizes for any marathon events.
  • Prizes for any non-go side events (eg football, pits).
  • Special prizes (eg sportsmanlike behaviour, oldest player, youngest player, player from furthest away).

During any speeches, remember to include thanks to Professional players who have assisted at the event, to any normally unsung workers and to any sponsors.

Usually someone will want to thank the organisers for the congress at the end of the speeches. It may be wise to arrange this, otherwise confusion can reign.
