Go Side Events

These have been played at Go Congresses.

Competitive tournaments

Note that in all of these competitive events, consideration wants to be given to the objective of the event. Is it to find the best player/team or to provide a fun and interesting event for all players? In particular, at one EGC event handicaps were limited to 9 stones "Because more would not be interesting for Dan players" - this meant that a 6dan might play a 20kyu on 9 stones, surely not fun for either party!

See also: Special Go Events.

Note that after all, side events are side events. If you begin to worry that the tournament does not resolve the top clearly enough, it is tempting to add rounds. Avoid it. Pair Go is fun, but if you have started the tournament at 10 o'clock int the morning and finish just before midnight it is no more fun. If you still think that at least 5 rounds are needed, consider letting everyone to play 3 or 4 rounds and have separate finals after that.

Almost normal Go

  • Lightning?
  • 9 by 9?
  • 13 by 13?
  • Other sizes
    • 21 by 21 (played during EGC2000)
  • Pair?
  • Rengo? - like pair go but with a team of say 3 and 1 board
  • Teams? - player v player - with team of say 3, 3 boards
  • Rapid?
  • Continuous self-paired handicap?

More unusual

  • Various shaped go boards
    • Circular
    • Town plans (This has been done in the UK at Milton Keynes)
  • Joker Go
  • Phantom Go
  • Beer tournament
  • Multiplayer Go
  • Dice Go
    • The first few (12?) moves are played using 2 dice. If a player rolls say 5 & 2 he can play on any available 5-2 point. If all 5-2 points are full, reroll. A 1 means above line 6 rather than line 1.
