What would 1x2 board behave? I suppose the game would oscillate between:

and:

each with two passes in between. Is my understanding correct?

My statement about ending play was not precise. Here is how the Ing style ending I suggested would work.

[Diagram]
Black sets up ko

B3, W4 = pass

Suppose Black starts with B1. The White can take the ko with W2. Next each player passes. If B5 is a pass, W6 will be the fourth pass in this position, ending play. So B5 takes the ko back.

[Diagram]
Diagram 2

W6, B7 = pass

[Diagram]
Diagram 3

B9, W10 = pass

W10 is the fourth pass in this position, and play ends in a White win.

So Black does best to pass originally, and then so does White. Best play is four passes.

WiltonKee: "1x2 board" crossing over "Sending 2 returning 1" (2007-02-12 17:27) [#3073]

What about this?

[Diagram]
Initial board position
[Diagram]
Black starts to occupy 1x2 board.
[Diagram]
White responds.
[Diagram]
Black uses her irremovable ko-threat.
[Diagram]
White admits that the right side is bigger.
[Diagram]
Black returns one (allowed because it is situational superko).
[Diagram]
W6 can only pass.
[Diagram]
Black re-occupies 1x2 board because of the intervention of pass.
[Diagram]
W8 can only pass. B9 also passes because Black is satisfied with this as ending board position. Here comes two passes on this position.
[Diagram]
With passes, White can take the 1x2 board.
[Diagram]
This time Black 11 (B1) chooses to pass. W2 also passes as she is satisfied with this board position. Here comes 3 cumulative passes on this board position.
[Diagram]
But now Black 13 (B3) re-re-occupies 1x2 board so that another 2 consecutive passes on this board position comes. Under Ing-style scheme, game shall end here.

It seems inconsistent with the result of a sole "1x2 board" or a sole "Sending 2 returning 1". Is it really the case?

Dear Wilton,

It seems inconsistent with the result of a sole "1x2 board" or a sole "Sending 2 returning 1". Is it really the case?

Thank you. :-)

The inconsistency is not bothersome per se, since ko can unite otherwise independent regions (or boards). However, this version of my rules arose in discussion with other people, who objected to my suggestion of treating an odd cycle as a pass. So my original intent was to have this variation end with a White stone on the 1x2 board.

Maybe I'll have to go back to my original end of play rule, which stops play when the same player passes a second time in the same position. But people do not like that, either.

Maybe positional superko is better. People will accept that. ;-)

Best,

Bill
