RobertVK: Japanese katakana/hiragana (2019-01-30 18:14) [#11313]

I've noticed that most (all?) of the Japanese words on this site are spelled with the katakana alphabet, not the hiragana alphabet. Why is that? I'm just a beginner at Japanese but it seems it should be the other way around. Also, when I search for these katakana words on dictionary websites it comes up with no result, but using the hiragana spellings gives the expected result.

Using katakana for Go terms is a long-standing Japanese custom. Mihori Sho started the convention in the 1940s to distinguish technical terms from other things.
