The text for the 2 diagrams under the heading "Directly to the 1-2 point" seems to indicate that black can force a seki in gote for white by playing at the vital point 1.
However, it seems that white can both live and keep the corner territory after white 8, and doesn't even need to make another move in the corner unless black ataris. If black 9 ataris, white 10 captures at the 1-1 point to make two eyes. If black 9 is at the 1-1 point instead, then we have a bent four that's not a "corner bent four" and white can easily make two eyes. White doesn't even have to reply to this move unless black later ataris.
I'm a go beginner so I'm probably missing something important. I'd appreciate any help to understand this position.
