Mokurai: Proposal for SL character set conversion (2015-02-03 22:46) [#10398]

Sensei's Library Web pages say that they are in the ISO 8859-1 character set, meant for European languages only. This appears not to be the case, considering how much Unicode-encoded Korean, Japanese, and Chinese appear in these pages, and the fact that I intend to contribute rather more material on go (baduk, igo, wéi qí) terminology in all three. I would like to see the entire site converted to correctly represent its use of Unicode. I can write a script to enable the conversion, and presumably so can the sysadmins. We mainly need the header

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">

instead of

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

and we need to make sure that any accented characters and such with ISO-8859-1 codes in the range hex 80-FF are converted to their Unicode equivalents.

Converting the site to Unicode is a long-standig todo item for me. However, it is not as easy as just running a simple script. I need to go through all of the code and make sure that there are no ISO8859-only functions there (in PHP, by default all functions are ISO8859 only.) While in some situations "wrong" functions are not critical, they may be critical in others. Also, the DB table definitions have to be changed, all of the archive converted etc. I may have some breathing room in March and April and will try to convert the site then.
