It seems to me, that 7 at 8 in the solution diagram is also possible. If White ruins Black's center eye, Black make two eyes at the top or escape along the firt line. The cost is two captured black stones, but depending on surrounding unseen stones, this might be preferrable.

then after White removes the center eye Black can only get six in a row on the second line. And as referenced on the solution page that is a dead shape.
