Tewari seems totally sound to me in a certain specific sense: the stones don't know the order in which they were played. If you join a game at move 101, can you judge a position? You are in the same position as the stones: you also don't know the order in which moves were played. I think if you look at pro examples, you'll see that this is how their analysis works. To show the analysis, they play an alternate sequence, but the judgment isn't about the sequence, it's about the position---however it was reached.
