Karl Knechtel: Does the name "sixteen soldiers" refer to sixteen stones on the board? If so, which? The first 16?
There's a traditional board game called "Sixteen Soldiers". I think the position after move 16 of this match reminded someone of it. Right now I can't find a link which gives a good description of the traditional game; the best I can come up with is http://atschool.eduweb.co.uk/ufa10/game1.htm or http://www.boardgamegeeks.com/game/13756
Go World issue 35 contains the story of the game and a short description of the Sixteen Soldiers game.
"There is a very old Japanese board game in which one side (the fox, to use our terminology) starts with a stone in the centre. The 'hounds' have to trap the fox, which can capture hounds by moving in between two of them, so that it cannot move."
The picture of the initial setup and the commented Kosugi-Go game is available in Go World Archives, for a mere USD 2.50. http://www.kiseidodigital.com/toc.html
