I'm confused by the paragraph beginning:

Unfortunately it is the worst way to display data using a keyboard. The normal convention uses the slash...

What follows looks as though it is actually a fine way of displaying data using a keyboard.

The only way I can make sense of it is to assume that "tree representation" means what I would have assumed before I read the page--that is a picture with a root node at the top and branches below--whereas what is described here is a text-based shorthand for a picture of a tree.

Is this correct?

This is actually an opinion page by Charles Matthews. (The layout made it look like he wrote only the footnote.)

I kind of fall in between. I think that the slash notation is OK, but I prefer a 2 dimensional layout.
