66.93.129.63: definition of active? (2007-08-28 00:46) [#3859]

What definition of active is being used here? I would expect it would mean "still playing in professional tournaments" because all pros are active in some way (teaching, for example) while they are still alive. If it indicates participation in pro tournaments, I'm not really sure how Alexander Dinerstein and Janice Kim are still marked as active. Maybe it's just out of date, but I won't change the page because maybe some people here have more information/references to their recent pro games.

yes, i would say they are inactive concerning professional play - though otherwise they may be very busy. (that some once every two years qualify as european representative for a championship, does not mean they are active as professionals. those places are open to european amateurs as well)

i am not sure about diana koszegi. is she in hungary or is she travelling between korea and hungary right now.

I updated the activity field by adding "in EU" where appropriate. I also set James Kerwin as "teaching", since he seems to have stopped competing in the US. I believe the same applies to Janice Kim.

A good question for later is how recent activity must be. Svetlana Shikshina hasn't competed for two years, but I would not call her inactive.

svetlana shikshina is teaching. active in the eu is pretty meaningless, they are active like amateur players there. no special professional activity. the hanguk kiwon lists them in a separate group now as well, together with the koreans teaching abroad.

I have no problem with that, tapir. The page still listed them as active. I changed it to "active in eu"' but "inactive" or "teaching" would also be fine by me.
