Bill: I am surprised that 
is in the book. It is a losing ko threat. Because of that, IMO this is not a good solution. (Note that can be at "a", sacrificing the tail in return for a pon-nuki.)

Bill: Starting with looks like an improvement to me. It eliminates White's losing ko threat, which will sometimes be the right play. :)
