Riyuexing Cup

    Keywords: Tournament

The Riyuexing Cup (日月星杯, Rìyuèxīng Bēi) was a China-Korea team event held in 2005. Sometimes spelled Jiyexing Cup.

This event was put together by CCTV and the Zhongguo Qiyuan (Chinese government agency for table games) with the help of the Hankuk Kiwon (Korean Baduk Association) and YTN TV. It was sponsored by Celestial NutriFoods Ltd.

Overview

Each country fielded a five player team. Each team member would play against every player of the opposing team (Scheveningen system). This would entail five rounds of five games each, a total of 25 games.

However, the fifth and final round was postponed and eventually abandoned, with China leading 11-9.

As a China-Korea match it was similar to the later Zhaoshang Cup (2011-14), although the format was different.

The [ext] Wikipedia page uses a match-by-match rundown, so let's use a player-by-player one for some variety.

Results

Hu Yaoyu beat Park Yeonghun and Kim Seongryong, and lost to Choi Cheolhan and Yoo Changhyuk.

Luo Xihe beat Yoo Changhyuk and Song Taekon, and lost to Kim Seongryong and Choi Cheolhan.

Wang Xi beat Song Taekon and Kim Seongryong, and lost to Park Yeonghun and Choi Cheolhan.

Zhou Heyang beat Yoo Changhyuk, Song Taekon and Park Yeonghun, and lost to Kim Seongryong.

Wang Lei beat Song Taekon and Park Yeonghun, and lost to Choi Cheolhan and Yoo Changhyuk.

The extremes of both success and failure were with the Koreans: Choi won all his games and Song lost all of his.
