placid

  Difficulty: Expert   Keywords: Ko, Theory

A placid ko is one that isn't hyperactive (see komaster). That is, the local count does not depend upon who can win the ko. Most kos are placid.

Example

[Diagram]
Placid Ko (outer stones alive)

If Black wins this ko the local score will be +3. If White wins it it will be -18. (White scores are negative, by convention.) The local count is -4, and each play in the ko gains 7 points. This is so regardless of who is komaster.
