Charles Matthews The reduction plays at 5 (ear point) and 7 (shoulderhit) are standard techniques. It looks as if Black is playing a very sober game, trying for a clear territorial lead, and hoping the central fighting won't change matters much. There's the rub - the centre is bigger. Can Black therefore avoid a splitting attack on the top side and lower right groups?
