I have started to play go in 2010 and within a year I reached the first kyu level by following the advice I give at my thegameofGoPage website, especially the the tactics section.
I haven't had anyone to teach me - neither professional nor amateur and had to learn to play by myself. Most of that time I did not know anyone else who would play go, so I only played online and learned from the books I recommend there.
The website not only provides advice on how to play go better, but also describes how to approach the learning process itself so that you can benefit the most from the time you spend learning the game. Attitude is generally not discussed, but obviously : the more you enjoy it, the easier it is for you to learn. Although I was the lead writer, the advice offered there has been co-written and peer-reviewed by several players of various strengths.
