Freeze Go

Freeze Go is played according to regular Go rules with one exception: Capturing is not allowed after an atari. That is, if Black has just reduced the number of liberties of any white group to one, White may not capture stones in the following move. Self-ataris don’t count. There was a Freeze Go tournament at the European Go Congress 2023 in Markkleeberg (Germany).

Strategy

According to the EGC2023 website "this can lead to absolutely crazy variations where both players scramble to play any atari they can find, repeatedly “freezing” their opponent."
