Cornell Baduk Club

The Cornell Go Club is an official student organization at Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York, USA.

During the school year, the club meets in Willard Straight Hall, in the cafe on the top floor, between the browsing library and the balcony. The time, and day of the week often change at the beginning of each semester, to accommodate student schedules. To play at any other time, you can borrow our boards from the browsing library with an ID.

Learning Baduk

New players are always welcome. Over the years, we have had a variety of skill levels, from 25 kyu to 7 dan. In addition, handicaps allow for fun and challenging games between players of different skills.

Baduk Books at Cornell

The Kroch Asia Library has a good collection of go books. The easiest and most effective way of browsing for books on Chinese Chess and Go in the Cornell libraries is to go to the online catalog, select "search by call number" and put GV1458. A list of the books in the catalog starting with that call number will appear. You will see several books in Japanese and Mandarin, too.

History

2011: Four members attended the NJ Open. In October, we held the 2nd Annual Cornell Open.

2010: Four members attended the NJ Open. Five members attended the Empty Sky Spring tournament in Rochester. In December, we held a 4 round tournament ( results) which attracted about 20 people. Steve Colburn took first place.

2009: Regained official status with Cornell Student Activities Office. Thanks to Richard Liang for organizing this. Members attended the NJ Open, and both Rochester tournaments.

2007: A lack of undergraduate interest (officers) led to the club losing status as a formal university club, though club attendance remained steady.

2004-2006: The club was called "Cornell Go and Chinese Chess Club" and was organized by Justin, Yu Jye, and John, who have since graduated.

2002-2005: The IthacaNYGoClub met at Poney's house.

1999-2002: ???

1997: According to Sam Zimmerman, AGA Database adminstrator, the Cornell Club was last a chapter of the AGA in 1997.

1993-1999: Adrian Mariano: "I was a graduate student from 1993-1999. I don't know if the club was an official student organization during that time. Maybe not. We had regular meetings, though not many people came. Typically it was just myself, Connelly, a non-tenured faculty member whose name I forget, and a Chinese guy, Mr. Wu. We met in Goldwin Smith Hall. We even had a tournament in 1995. I had the impression that the tournament was registered with the AGA. People came from as far away as Rochester."

1992-1993: ???

1988-1991: Trevor Morris re-started the Go Club while an undergraduate at Cornell. It met regularly, and stored its sets at the Math Library. Guangjiong Chen was the strongest member at that time. His AGA Rating as of spring 2009 is 8.7 dan.

Pre-history: Many great go players have studied at Cornell. Our advisor, Prof. Connelly, has been playing Go in Ithaca for almost 40 years.
