Variation: white mistake  

Black might play trying to trick white: is a mistake. Black recaptures at , then the black stones can connect out, and white is dead.

Variation: white's correct response  

After this choice of , black is caught in a connect-and-die: the stones are captured, and connecting at a will only lose more stones.
