Ishida's joseki dictionary advocates this W1, transposing to 35 point low approach two-space low pincer. This is a common response.

The press with W1 has been played a few times for influence.

Trick play?  

Kogo's joseki dictionary contains extensive analysis of the position after W1 and B2 (and either white a or b next); however, in pro games black never seems to respond to W1 at B2.
