In the example "Big Eye: 5 vs. 5", the text says that "Black appears to have only 4 liberties, but actually has 5." Then in the second footnote, it takes white a minimum of seven moves to take the black group.
Can someone help me understand this? Shouldn't it say 'but black actually has seven liberties in the tactical sense of how many moves it takes to capture the group'?
While it might take 7 actual moves it only takes 5 net moves. In the sequence black also plays 2 moves that capture white stones. Black plays these captures to prevent white from directly capturing his stones. But these capture moves don't take any liberties of white in the capturing race.
