This is a tricky bit of English grammar because 9-dan is a foreign honorific. It's not the point of the sentence which we want to modify with adjectives, however. And very hesitant to use "a Japanese," as this sounds like a noun (historically derisive).
Comma feels wrong. See 14 "origin" adjective vs. 17 "noun as adjective" on the technical link above, so not coordinate adjectives as was claimed.
