It seems very difficult for black to block white in basic gonnect.

A more balance variant might be to place two stones of each color in diagonally opposing corners, and requiring connection or capture of these stones for victory. This creates more fighting in the center, quickly, rather than allowing black to threaten in multiple directions with his first few moves.
