It is my recollection that chess world champ Em. Lasker did indeed play and both he and Edward Lasker took it up at the same time. It took over a year before arguably one of the greatest games players in history was able to defeat a Japanese player whom he met by chance (who introduced the two strong chess players to the game) at even steep odds.
