YtterbiJum: Suicide as ko threat: explanation? (2012-03-12 00:21) [#9292]

Suicide as a ko threat

Why is it beneficial for White to play W1, removing three stones and allowing Black to then play at B1? Would it not be better for White to play elsewhere, and then if B1, Black will only capture two White stones?

I don't understand this example.

Superdave: It is an example of a ko threat. Black is ordinarily alive, but if white can play at W1 twice in a row then black is dead. So after the white suicide black must decide between keeping his group alive or taking the ko.

It would be a losing ko threat under territory rules (costing one point) because white is throwing in an extra stone (and black eventually has to capture anyway), but the rule sets that allow suicide are usually area scoring, so it might not be.
