I have been wondering if such great Players as the Hon'inbos Dosaku, Jowa and Shusaku, Yasui Sanchi and other of the Edo period were Samurai. According to Invincible - The Games of Shusaku Shusaku was born as Kuwabara Torajiro - so he had a surname - but was the son of a merchant, which were not allowed to have those. However, his father Kuwabara Wazo wasn't born, but adopted into his wifes family and took over the Kuwabara name. Could it be possible that this was a marriage in which Wazo took advantage from getting into a Samurai family and the Kuwabaras from his money? Or was the Tokugawa policy of only allowing Samurai, Kube, doctors and shintoistic priests surnames and sword not as strict in late Edo periods Shikoku? I'd love to hear your opinions. --firelordzuko
