193.130.88.225: Books by Go Seigen (2010-04-19 17:09) [#7661]

Zengarden

I was looking at a book by Go Seigen entitled "Winning a won game", published by Yutopian, with the sub-title "Go Seigen's Lectures, volume 2". A long search has failed to identify a Volume 1 of the great master's lectures, and I wonder if anyone has information on this?

In the preface to the book, there is a reference to another publication by Go Seigen called "Analysing the Joseki", which I cannot find in any catalogue. However, there is another work by Go Seigen dealing with openings, "A Way of Play for the 21st Century" published by The Whole Board Press: would this, in fact, be the Volume 1 of Go Seigen's lectures on Go, but published by another publisher than Yutopian?

Can anyone shed any light on this?

I've looked at both books, and the most I can say in answer to your question is that A Way of Play for the 21st Century is probably not the volume 1 referred to in Winning a Won Game, because the former is rather clearly a fuseki book rather than a joseki book.

On the back cover of "A Way of Play for the 21st Century," the book is described as "a compilation of lectures on the opening that Go Seigen gave from October 1996 through March 1997 on 'IGO KOZA,' a GO program broadcast in Japan every Sunday by NHK." The contents seem to bear this out.

My guess is that there is a Volume 1 in Japanese that has not been translated into English.
