No, see jst.

velobici: Re: John Tilley (2009-01-23 17:50) [#5727]

they are jst and John S Tilley. Both associated in some way with Ishi Press. And they are not the same person ?

HermanHiddema: Re: John Tilley (2009-01-23 16:59) [#5729]

Jon Diamond indicates, on his homepage, that he learned to play go in 1961, reached 1 dan in 1965, stopped playing around 1979 and is currently around 5 dan(but has a 6 dan certificate)

John Tilley indicates, on his homepage (jst), that he learned to play go in 1965, became 1 dan in 1970 (by visiting Japan) and peaked at 2 dan.

I don't see any reason to assume they are the same person?

Yes, they're the same person.

Looking at the Tony Goddard page, I was reminded of Kissinger's Law: the less important the issue, the more intense the conflict. Let's hope this page doesn't go the same way.

But I can assure you that John Tilley and Jon Diamond are quite distinct, although both were Cambridge mathematicians from London.

Yes Jon Diamond and John Tilley are different people.

My question is the following: Is the John Tilley mentioned on Jon Diamond's page the same as John S Tilly who wrote a book published by Ishi Press ?

HermanHiddema: Re: Incredulous (2009-01-23 17:50) [#5732]

Ah, ok! That was not clear to me, your original question provided no context. In that case, yes I think so (I am not sure, but I think it is unlikely to be false).

velobici: Re: Incredulous (2009-01-23 17:53) [#5733]

No context ?

Subject: John Tilly
Body: Same person as John S Tilley of GO - International Handbook and Dictionary ?

as you can see above and I have copied and pasted below. sigh.

velobici: John Tilley (2009-01-23 15:58) [5725]

Same person as John S Tilley of GO - International Handbook and Dictionary ?

then I asked in response to your answer:

they are jst and John S Tilley. Both associated in some way with Ishi Press. And they are not the same person ? Dont know why you would think I am talking about John Diamond.

HermanHiddema: Re: Incredulous (2009-01-23 17:55) [#5734]

You started a thread on the "Jon Diamond" page, about John Tilley, asking "Same person as John S Tilley?". I assumed that your title was an indication of the subject of your question, and that your question pertained to the page it was asked on.

velobici: Re: Incredulous (2009-01-23 17:58) [#5735]

Agreed. My first statement of the question was not clear and could be read to be asking about Jon Diamond vs John Tilley. Perhaps one changed his name.

The second question they are jst and John S Tilley. Both associated in some way with Ishi Press. And they are not the same person ? I had hoped was more clearly stated in that the two individuals are explicitly stated in the question.

HermanHiddema: Re: Incredulous (2009-01-23 18:06) [#5736]

Yes, that one is more clear. It is hard to change your assumptions in the middle of a conversation, and I failed to do so :-)

HermanHiddema: Same person (2009-01-23 18:12) [#5737]

I think by the way, that it is safe to assume that John Tilley and John S, Tilley are the same person. John Tilley created a homepage named "JST", which would indicate that his middle initial is S.
