The fact is, if you're ahead, you'll want to get rid of opportunities for your opponent to catch up - even if it means losing several points. Remember that winning by 9.5 or by 0.5 is still winning. On the other hand, if you're behind, you'll want to do anything to catch up, which includes complicating things and giving your opponent more opportunities to make mistakes, because if you just play safe moves and stay in your comfort zone, you'll just safely lose. Again, losing is still losing.
