I believe that the semantics of "beaten" is less formal than "lost to". I know "lost to" may sound overly negative to some people; however, a professional tournament would be an event focused on tradition and formality. That it why I believe that "lost to" serves as the best word to use (unless you can think of something else that may fit). Remember that a sentence has to flow cleanly.
