Dear Gazette,
May I ask how do you calculate the ranking of the players ? Do you have a particular scoring system, eg. champion = 10 marks, runner-up = 5 marks, quarterfinal = 2 marks, etc. and different competitions also have different scalings ?
Gan Si Yang recently started his games at (8,8) once in black and once in white ! You may check it up.
cheers, David.
Dear David,
Yes, your guess is quite close to the algorithm I use. In general, Champions get 10 points, Runner-ups 5 points, and so forth, and the points earned continue to get halved till the first round. Only the final rounds are taken into account, so none of the preliminaries for a world title are scored. Competitions are generally scaled on two factors, how "international" it is, and how many "rounds" there are in the finals. For example, a fully international world title (which includes preliminaries in Europe and North America and Taiwan) will merit the full 10 points for winning the title. The breakdown is given below:
And yes! Gan Siyang has been playing a lot of 8-8 point in this years Chinese Rank Promotion tournament, both as black and as white. I might have to update the Gazette.
Cheers, Jing
