Vietnamese Name
Keywords: Culture & History
A Vietnamese name consists of a family name, a middle name and a given name, in this order. Typically, each of the three names consist of one word, although a given name can have two words. Occasionally, the middle name is omitted. The most commonly seen family name is Nguyen (Nguyễn), with more than 38% of the Vietnamese having this family name.
Like names in many East Asian cultures, the Vietnamese places the family name first and the given name last. Unlike in many East Asian cultures, most people are politely addressed by their given names, i.e., "Do Muoi" would be addressed as Mr. Muoi, not Mr. Do.
