Dr. Sung-Hwa Hong is probably best known for his popular novel about a young go player trying to turn pro, First Kyu. He also served the go community as a Vice-President of the Canadian Go Association, and twice he represented Canada at the World Amateur Go Championship.
Sung-Hwa Hong was a dentist by profession. He died in Vancouver on September 21, 2001. The go world is poorer for the loss of this strong player, organizer, and writer who so effectively bridged differences of nationality.
