I really dislike this exchange...

 

This descent splits the corner stones from the zero-space low pincer stones, it also threatens to smack the corner stones with A or B.

 

If Black protects his corner position, White can try to gently chase out the zero-space low pincer stones.

 

(This is bad.)

 

So, why would White exchange before descending?

 

Also, if splitting is so big, why didn't Black connect under when he had the chance?

Sigh... I'll never understand this problem!
