B1 protects a problematic cut  

A white play at B1 is a constant nuisance in variations where black plays B1 elsewhere--so black protects at B1 immediately. After this, black has no problem defending against white attacks at, for example, a or b.

Example 1: black lives with eyes at the marked points.

Example 2: white cannot push at the marked point, and so black makes two eyes with B7.
