W1 seems soft, but it is the correct move. Black's attempts to create eyespace with B2 and B4 are met with strikes at the vital points of W3 and W5. B6 tries to create an eye at a, but W7 strikes at black's shortage of liberties.

[Diagram]

This B4 fails even more quickly when W5 makes miai of a and b.

If black plays the vital point instead, thinking your opponent's good move is your good move, white throws in with W3 to set up an atari with W5. White can play this W7 to set up shortage of liberties, or W7 at B8 to connect out.

[Diagram]

B2 or B2 at a fail because after W3 captures the marked stones, black is left without enough eyespace.

Best Defence

B2 is the best defence and leads to a ko for life.
