Ingenious life and death puzzles / Errata

This page contains discussions on errors in problems in Yang Yilun's Ingenious life and death puzzles.

At first there is a large discussion on problem 15 in Volume 1. Dieter Verhofstadt thought it contained an error, but Leon Matoh? gently pointed out his mistake.

On page 31, solution diagram 15 mentions:

Solution diagram 15

"If B1 at B5, W2 at W6 is sente. Next, White can play B3 to live."

Diagram 1

If W2, B3...

Diagram 2

W4 is a mistake : B5 makes miai of a and b to kill.

Diagram 3

If White plays atari at W4, B5 reverts to the original solution diagram.

Diagram 4

This sequence makes miai of a and b.

--Dieter Verhofstadt

Leon Matoh 5d points out:

Diagram 5

If Black prevents White from making a second eye at B9, then W10 makes miai of a and b, capturing some stones and living.

Thomas Kahle from Leipzig has found another error in Mr. Yilun's puzzles: check out [ext] for his Number Games No. 2.
