Go is an indirect game

  Difficulty: Beginner   Keywords: Strategy

Examples of what is meant by this.

  • A 4-4 point in the corner expects future influence on the side or in the centre, after an invasion at 3-3.
  • Attacks on groups can be effective even if they don't kill.
  • Influence in one part of the board may help invading or attacking elsewhere, rather than turn into territory locally.
  • Strategy is often built up from double-purpose plays and miai, rather than as a template.
