  • Warning - these rules have been written off the top of my head and need checking for accuracy... SGBailey 2003-10-29

  • RJ: You say do not put captured stones back in the bowl, cos EGF rules say not to. Where are the EGF Tournament rules? What to do with captured stones? SGBailey 2003-11-06
    • RobertJasiek 2003-11-07: After finishing my current research on Japanese rules I will have time to upload the EGF Tournament Rules and all the other EGF tournament rulesets. The captured stones are kept as if they were prisoners so that the opponent can count them during the game if he likes. During counting the final score, the stones are treated like all other stones: filled in.

  • RobertJasiek 2003-11-07: It is a feature of the Simplified Ing Rules that they do NOT speak of "dead stones". Furthermore, counting occurs AFTER removals of regions due to agreement or alternate moving. I.e. removals are NOT part of the counting. I emphasize this because a clear understanding of the rules requires a clear usage of its terms. "dead stones" is not a term of the rules. If you still want to speak about dead stones, then it must be made clear that it is a perceived strategic object.
    • It may be that we need two pages here, or at least a link to a second page elsewhere. One page needs to be proper legal style rules, which is what I think you are dealing in. The other wants to be a simple set of rules that are easily understood and work most of the time even if strictly incorrect. The latter is what I intended this page to be. We could use either "dead" or "captured" stones interchangably here. SGBailey 2003-11-07

RobertJasiek 2003-11-07: The Simplified Ing Rules are a more or less simple set of rules. They are only more or less simple and not just simple because they include an agreement / disagreement phase and an optional resumed alternate moving. The purpose of the Simplified Ing Rules is not to be so simple that it would be without an agreement / disagreement phase and an optional resumed alternate moving. European players (as represented in the EGF Rules and Ratings Commission) do not want rules that are so simple. They want rules that are only more or less simple because they want the a phase with the option to agree or to disagree about removals.

Rule texts are not understood by everybody. Even simple rule texts are not understood by everybody because there are players that do not want to try understanding rule texts. This does not mean that the rule text would not be simple but it means just that there are players that do not want to try understanding rule texts.

There is no need to write a simpler rules text because the current rules text is exactly as simple as the European players want it to be.

What you are asking for is a list of keywords that provides strategic guidelines. This is not a second rules text but it is a guideline for strategy when using the rules text. I will write that later.

  • RobertJasiek 2003-11-07: It is not necessary that you try to improve the pages about rules. I will do it (later) anyway and include examples. You might prefer to concentrate on topics other than rules. OC, you may edit pages about rules but you waste your and my time because later I will provide much more exhaustive information than you imagine now. Only currently (for some months) I do not have the time to do so.
    • Maybe we should rename/copy the page to "Ing Rules Overview". Then I could edit those. We need a non-legalistic page which is readable and short. The people I was hoping it would be useful for will not bother to read more that one sheet of A4. SGBailey 2003-11-07

  • RobertJasiek 2003-11-07: Since you do not understand the Simplified Ing Rules well yet, please do not write things like that. I will write them later. Of course, it will be short. However, there will also be a more detailed commentary with examples that is needed because of the not so very simple agreement options. Please do not try to write anything before I do because probably I would have to replace it by what I will write later anyway. Please just be patient, thank you!
