Igo Myoden

Igo Myoden (囲碁妙伝) is a book written by Gennan Inseki and [ext] published in 1852 in Osaka, with further editions in 1964 and in 1991.

This book is notable as the first Go publication in Japan with extensive commentaries by a top player. Before this book, it was customary to publish game records with no comments at al.

There is a digitized version of all four volumes at the Waseda University [ext] site.

1991 edition (two volumes, published by Kyoikusha) contains his commentaries in modern Japanese combined with additional comments by Takagi Shoichi. ISBNs:978-4315510775 and 978-4315510782.

In his Killer of Go, Sakata Eio reports a story from Igo Myoden. Wakayama Rikkan, a disciple of House Inoue, discovered a move that both players (Yasui Senchi and Honinbo Retsugen) didn't see.
